The testing you require when you arrive in England depends on where you have been in the 10 days before you arrive. Please see the latest information for the rules for entering England and also the UK government's rules for travelling to the UK.

If you are fully vaccinated and arrive in England:

  • You must book and pay for a Day 2 test before you travel.
  • You do not need to quarantine on your arrival in England.
  • You must take a test on or before the end of Day 2 after you arrive (i.e. day 0, 1 or 2).
  • If your test result is positive, you must self-isolate.

To qualify under the fully vaccinated rules for travel to England, you must have proof of full vaccination with a full course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England. Approved vaccines are: Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, Janssen, Sinovac-CoronaVac, Sinopharm Beijing or Covaxin. Please see the UK government website for more details. The proof must have been issued by either:

Please note that if you are travelling to England and you are not fully vaccinated according to the fully vaccinated rules you need to order a Day 2 & 8 and TTR testing package.

  • If you live in halls of residence you must select "Campus Delivery" on check-out and your testing kit will be waiting for you on arrival at your accommodation.
  • If you live in private accommodation off-campus you must select "Free Shipping" on check-out and your testing kit will be posted to your home address.

Please note that kits are limited to one per person. Please do not order more then one kit.

You have two choices to return your tests:

  1. Drop your completed kit in the normal postal service using the prepaid packaging included in your kit
  2. Or for quicker results, drop your test kit to a UoB collection points (see below) from where they are collated and couriered to the laboratory

The PCR swab test itself is 100% sensitive in detecting the presence of the RNA of coronavirus and will pick up the presence of COVID-19 in your nose and throat.

Receiving the test kit

Prior to travel, please simply follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure you apply for this test ahead of time - i.e. before you travel to the UK.
  2. The day you arrive in the UK is your day 0 and you can conduct your day 2 test on or before day 2.
  3. Please fill in your address and student/staff number. If your student number does not work and has a "0" (zero) in front of it please do not enter the zero. Your number will be checked against our records.
  4. Kits are limited to one kit per person. Please do not order more then one kit as you will only receive one kit.
  5. During checkout you will have a choice of "free shipping" or "campus delivery" If you live in halls of residence you must select "Campus Delivery" on check-out and your testing kit will be waiting for you on arrival at your accommodation. If you live in private accommodation off-campus you must select "Free Shipping" on check-out and your testing kit will be posted to your home address.
  6. If you select the "Free Shipping" postal option the booking system will ask you on which day you wish your test kit to be posted to you (it will ask you to "Select Dispatch Date For Test"). We recommend you select the day before you arrive in the UK so your kit arrives on day 0 or 1. Please note that we do not post kits on weekends or bank holidays and there is no postal delivery on a Sunday. If you wish for a Monday delivery we recommend selecting Friday as the postal day.
  7. On the confirmation page, follow the link to register your test with us and complete your registration. You will also receive a confirmation email with the link to register your test.
  8. You will then be given a unique code to reference (e.g. LMLAB1234567) when you fill out your UK government passenger locator form before you arrive in the UK.
  9. It is vital you register your test before entering the UK as the information is required for UK border entry. Also if you do not register your test we there will be a delay with processing your test in the laboratory.
  10. If you do not receive your confirmation email after this booking, please check your spam or junk email before contacting us.

For further details on the booking process please read the additional information below. Please remember to register your test before entering the UK to obtain your LMLAB code.

How do I take the test?

You will receive a kit containing the day 2 test.

  1. Please carefully read the swab-kit instructions letter before taking your test. You must accurately complete a test request form.
  2. You must post or drop off the test to us the day that you conduct the test.
  3. You will need to take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2. The day of your arrival in England is day 0.
  4. Your day 2 test results will then be sent to you via email as soon as they are available (in 1 to 2 days after your test arrives at our lab).

Returning your tests to the laboratory (after you have done your test)

Full instructions are provided through the test booking process and with the kit.

You have two choices to return your tests:

  1. Drop your completed kit in the normal postal service using the prepaid packaging included in your kit
  2. Drop your test kit to a UoB collection point from where they are collated and couriered to the laboratory (for quicker results)

UoB test drop off sites are:

What happens if I test positive on my day 2 test?

Please note if you tested positive for your test you are not allowed to leave your quarantine address under any circumstances as per the UK quarantine rules: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-quarantine-when-you-arrive-in-england. Any other members of your household should also quarantine for 10 days from the date of your positive test.

The day 2 Covid-19 test is to help identify any potential new variants of Covid-19 entering the UK. We are also required by the UK Government to send your day 2 test for genomic sequencing if positive. If you test positive on your day 2 test, you must quarantine for a further 10 days after the day the test was taken (i.e. until day 13).

When will I receive my results?

You should receive your test result 1 to 2 days after your test arrives at our laboratory. We recommend that you drop off your tests at the two UoB drop-off sites. Please do not rely on Royal Mail if you need your result in a specific timeframe.

We are also required by the UK government to send your Day 2 test for genomic sequencing if your result is positive on your Day 2 test. For the full terms and conditions, please visit our Terms & Conditions and Refund Policy for more information.
